Biology Resource Description

This clip explores pollen and the reproductive processes of plants, how we can see this process in action, the importance of insect pollinators, and how the process is vital for fruit production and agriculture. He explains the vital role that pollinators like bees and other insects play in the process and how that, in turn, generates our fruit harvest. This clip is from the BBC series Science of the Harvest. Food fanatic Stefan Gates explores the science behind agriculture's most important event, harvest. To grow good food, and enough of it, farmers need to understand the science behind the harvest. Students could research the role that insects (and bees in particular), have in pollinating plants. Can they find any other examples of animals besides insects that pollinate specific plants? Students could then study the parts of flowers. They could be allowed to collect flowers from their gardens or the school grounds. These could then be drawn in their books or digital photographs taken. They could then be dissected and the individual parts of the flower identified. Care should be taken with sharp implements. This clip will be relevant for teaching Biology or Science. This topic appears in KS3/KS4/GCSE in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 3rd and 4th level and SQA National 4/5 in Scotland. ===================== For more clips from other subjects at the BBC Teach YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/bbcteach More resources for teachers from the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/teach More from BBC Learning Zone: http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone More resources from BBC Bitesize: http://www.bbc.co.uk/education ===================== Subscribe to create your own customised playlists, and get notified about our latest clips.
